As a small business owner, the idea of stepping away from your business can feel daunting. There are always emails to respond to, orders to fulfill, and clients to serve. I truely know the feeling of having that pit in my stomach of what if I miss a good order or someone else books that dream job because i'm not on my emails but taking time off isn’t just a luxury; it’s a necessity. Here’s why giving yourself a break can actually benefit both you and your business.

1. Recharge Your Creativity

Running a business often requires innovative thinking and fresh ideas. When you’re constantly in the grind, it’s easy to fall into a routine that stifles creativity. Taking time off gives your mind the space it needs to wander, explore, and come up with new ideas. Whether it’s a weekend getaway or a quiet afternoon in your art studio, stepping away can help you return with renewed inspiration.

2. Prevent Burnout

Burnout doesn’t just affect your well-being—it impacts your ability to serve your clients and grow your business. Overworking can lead to decreased productivity, decision fatigue, and even health issues. Regular breaks help you maintain a healthy balance, ensuring you can show up as your best self for your clients and team. The burnout can be unstoppable after a busy spring and holiday season so be sure to schedule time to reset and take are of yourself

3. Gain Perspective

When you’re in the thick of day-to-day operations, it can be hard to see the bigger picture. Time away from your business allows you to step back and assess what’s working and what isn’t. You might find new ways to streamline processes or identify opportunities for growth that you wouldn’t have noticed otherwise.

4. Foster Trust in Your Team

If you have a team, taking time off shows that you trust them to handle things in your absence. This empowers them to take ownership of their roles and can even reveal areas where they may need more support or training. Plus, it builds a culture that values balance and well-being. As a recovering control freak I know its hard to do this but baby steps will help your team grow in confidence and give you the freedom to take more frequent breaks throughout the yeat.

5. Model Healthy Boundaries

I'm all about the BOUNDARIES!! I can not emphasise how important healthy boundaries are! By prioritising time off, you’re modeling the importance of self-care and work-life balance. This can inspire those around you to do the same, creating a more sustainable and supportive work environment. Now i'm not saying you ignore all emails, of course if a dream client emails you a personal reply letting them know when you can meet with them when you're back from break or when they can expect a quote will. be very appreciated but clients will have a lot more respect for you and your time once you start to model that you respect yourself and your time.

How to Start Taking Time Off

Sounds easy but if you've read this whole article you're clearly not great at taing time off, you want small actionable steps so here they are!

Taking time off doesn’t have to mean a two-week vacation. Start small:

  • Schedule a day each week where you’re completely unplugged from work

  • Set clear boundaries around your work hours - again can not stress this enough! Your ideal client will respect your boundaries. Just make sure your communication around when and how you can be reqched in clear.

  • Plan mini-retreats or creative days where you can focus on hobbies or personal growth. This could be a simple as a trip to a gallery or as grand as a three week holiday (i've done both of these and can confirm a morning at a gallery is almost as glod as a three week holiday)

Remember, taking time off isn’t about neglecting your business; it’s about investing in its long-term success by prioritising your well-being. When you take care of yourself, you’re better equipped to take care of your business.
