As florists, we have a unique connection with nature and a responsibility to honor it by embracing sustainable practices. The floral industry, while centered on the beauty of natural materials, can have a significant environmental impact, from sourcing flowers to waste management. Here are some straightforward, impactful practices you can adopt to make your floral business greener and more sustainable.

1. Source Locally and Seasonally

By choosing flowers that are locally grown and in season, you reduce the carbon footprint associated with shipping. Local sourcing also helps support Australian farmers and growers, promoting a stronger, more resilient local economy. Seasonal blooms aren’t just environmentally friendly—they also reflect the natural beauty of each season, creating arrangements with an organic and unique appeal.

2. Go Foam-Free

Floral foam is commonly used for arrangements, but it’s also non-biodegradable and contributes to microplastic pollution. Many florists are now opting for foam-free techniques, such as using chicken wire, reusable containers, and flower frogs to create stunning designs without compromising sustainability. If going foam free seems out of your element, just remember keep practicing!

3. Reduce and Repurpose Waste

Floristry often results in a lot of organic and non-organic waste. Consider composting plant scraps, leaves, and other organic waste to reduce landfill impact. Additionally, recycle plastic, paper, and any other packaging materials you receive. Offering arrangements in reusable or recyclable packaging can also encourage clients to reduce waste.

4. Stop Overbuying!

Writing accurate and well-thought-out floral recipes is crucial for any florist aiming to minimize overbuying and reduce waste. By carefully planning each arrangement and determining the exact quantity of flowers and foliage needed, you can avoid the common pitfalls of overestimating supply. Good recipes allow for precise ordering, helping you to stay within budget and reduce the amount of unused, discarded materials at the end of each event.

Additionally, streamlined recipes support sustainable practices by reducing the demand on suppliers, conserving resources, and ultimately decreasing the environmental impact of waste.

5. Choose Eco-Friendly Packaging

Opt for biodegradable, recyclable, or reusable packaging materials. Kraft paper, jute twine, and glass vases are excellent alternatives to plastic. Many clients appreciate and are willing to support businesses that use environmentally friendly packaging.

6. Educate Your Clients

Sustainability is a shared responsibility. Informing your clients about your eco-conscious practices and encouraging them to compost or reuse parts of their floral arrangements can foster a sense of shared purpose. This can also enhance your brand’s reputation as a forward-thinking, environmentally conscious business.

By incorporating these small but significant changes, you can help reduce their environmental impact and promote a more sustainable approach to floral design. Embracing eco-friendly practices not only benefits the planet but also resonates with clients who value sustainability—making it good for both business and the environment.
